For the Culture: Call me Hembadoon, that Tiv Girl Vibe.

Monday, 27 August 2018

Hello and welcome to my blog.

'U ngu nena' meaning 'how are you?' in Tiv....for this blog post my name is 'Hembadoon' meaning 'the most beautiful' or 'the best' in Tiv.

Tiv is an ethnic nation in west Africa. They are predominantly based in Nigeria and Cameroon.

I made this Danshiki using their traditional fabric known as 'A'nger'....it is traditionally handwoven and usually worn for big occasions or ceremonies.

The Tiv People are strong, hardworking, receptive and hospitable. I know because I have Tiv friends, colleagues and also because I have been working in Benue state, Nigeria where they are predominantly based since 2009.

The women will usually make wrappers (one or two) and head tie with this fabric but I decided to do it my own way by making a danshiki with pockets.

I really enjoyed wearing this outfit....I am already thinking of ways I can restyle it...thinking with mom jeans and mules? what do you think?

I styled it with my shoes from Aldo and purse from Asos....to work on a Friday.

I want to get the Idoma fabric next.....but what to make with it??? thinking......

What do you think of this look? How else do you think I can style this danshiki?

That time I did not honour a prophet from my home town: Stripes on Stripes

Friday, 10 August 2018

You know how Jesus in Mark 6:4 said “A prophet is without honor only in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his own household.” I am as guilty as Jesus's relatives.....I committed the same "crime".

My sister is a makeup artist who has been asking to "beat" my face for the longest time ("longest time"? is that even correct english?)  but I always had excuses and reasons I wasn't available....

On this fateful Saturday I decided to be available.....And did she beat the face to perfection?! I think she did a really great job as she had to work with my brow as it is since it is only God I can allow to carve my brow.

I shot three looks with the make up.....you can imagine how may looks I would have shot this long summer break if I had taken her seriously early enough.

But as they say "better late than never" so I am going to milk her expertise the one weekend she has before school resumes.

So stay tuned for more blog posts with a perfect face beat.

In this post I am wearing a stripe T-shirt dress from Monki and since I love to be extra decided to play with patterns as evidenced by the stripe mules and slatted clutch from Asos ...see link below to shop for the dress and clutch and also book Kibana's glam for your face beat.....(click here to see another stripe on stripe post)

When life gives you lemon: Ankara shirt dress and black body con dress

Wednesday, 1 August 2018

Hello beautiful people, happy new month. I pray August will be good to us all.

I bought this Ankara shirt dress from Abike's stylin on Instagram but unfortunately did not check their size chart so I ended up with a dress that doesn't fit *sigh.

It was my fault so I could not send the dress back or seek any form of redress. * I argued with them small sha....lol

I love the print and the style of the dress and had to find a way around styling the dress so I wore it over this body con dress from boohoo.

Styled it with bag from Asos, garnished it with Check shoes from the shopper's haven on instagram and added a little pizazz with the glasses I bought from a street vendor in Abuja traffic for a whooping sum of 500 naira....not bad!

I decided to make the best of what would have other wise been a bad situation. The outcome is quite neat even if I say so myself.

Sometimes the hand life presents to us seems unfair but the best way to handle that season is to make the best of it...

Give whatever you have at hand your best shot, it may just God's way of preparing you for bigger and better opportunities.....you may not see it now but in future you will be grateful for that 'wilderness' experience.

God can only bless you with more if you are faithful with the little you have at hand so don't throw away the baby with the bath water...

I rocked my 'little' dress to work on a Wednesday.....I made lemonade out of my lemon plus I even got a blog post from that very mundane experience....talk about a win win situation.

Abike styling is an online Ready to wear store, they stock fabulous and vibrant ankara pieces at very affordable prices....I think this dress was 5000 Naira.

You can find them on instagram:
